At least three people were killed and five injured in a rockfall at Cappadocia, a popular tourist destination in central Turkey, on Thursday. The incident occurred at around 3:15 p.m. local time, according to officials.

The rockfall is believed to have been triggered by heavy rain, which caused rock fragments to break off from a volcanic geological formation known as a "fairy chimney". The fairy chimney is a distinctive feature of Cappadocia, characterized by tall, narrow, often cone-shaped rock formations that resemble chimneys.

The rock fragments fell onto people near the Goreme Open-Air Museum, according to Nevsehir Gov. Huseyin Kok. Three people died in the incident, with two of the victims identified as Turkish nationals. The identity and nationality of the third person killed have not been disclosed.

Rescue teams were searching through the rubble at the rockfall site, with the governor expressing hope that there would be no further casualties. Kok described the incident as "deeply saddening". It is unclear whether the dead and injured were tourists, employees, or others.

Cappadocia, located in central Turkey, is known for its unique landscape and cultural heritage, featuring distinctive fairy chimneys, cave dwellings, and ancient rock-cut churches. The incident is the latest in a series of fatal accidents involving tourists at popular destinations this month.
