Rep. Tom Tiffany, a Republican frontrunner in Wisconsin's gubernatorial primary, has warned voters that a potential general-election matchup with Democratic state Rep. Francesca Hong could determine the fate of socialism in the state.
Tiffany, speaking to Fox News Digital alongside former Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, suggested that the election could serve as a "firewall" against the spread of socialism, particularly given recent primary election results showing far-left candidates outpacing moderates nationwide. He posited that Wisconsin could be the key battleground in this effort.
Hong, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has advocated for progressive policies such as defunding the police and abolishing prisons. Her campaign platform also includes proposals to raise state income taxes on high-income individuals and couples.
Youngkin characterized Hong's views as "the antithesis of America," citing her support for DSA's platform, which he described as extreme. Tiffany echoed this sentiment, stating that many Wisconsinites do not accept policies like defunding the police or abolishing prisons.
Hong has walked back some of her previous comments on social media, but refused to provide a clear stance on defunding the police when asked by Fox News Digital. She attributed some of these past posts to "bad takes" and acknowledged that they may have been poorly worded.
Tiffany and Youngkin have sought to portray Hong's progressive record as a liability in the battleground state. They argue that Wisconsinites are rejecting extreme policies like those advocated for by Hong.
Hong, however, has maintained that her candidacy appeals to both Democrats and Republicans who are disillusioned with President Donald Trump and his aligned candidates. She enters Tuesday's primary as the frontrunner among Democratic candidates, facing off against three other contenders.
