Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Edgardo Henriquez threw the fastest strikeout pitch in team history on Saturday against the Detroit Tigers.
Henriquez, 24, froze Tigers catcher Dillon Dingler with a 103.6 mph front-door sinker in the eighth inning that clipped the edge of the strike zone for a called third strike. Dingler quickly challenged the call, but the review confirmed the strikeout. Statcast clocked Henriquez's sinker at 103.6 mph and 2,439 rpm.
According to MLB pitch-tracking data dating to 2008, this was the fastest strikeout pitch ever thrown by a Dodgers pitcher. Henriquez already holds the team's record for the 16 fastest recorded strikeout pitches, with 14 of those pitches being thrown this season.
Henriquez's 103.6 mph sinker on Saturday matched a career high he first achieved during a June 2 matchup with the Arizona Diamondbacks. His average sinker speed this season is 100.8 mph, and his four-seam fastball averages 100.5 mph.
Despite the loss for the Dodgers, Henriquez's impressive pitching performance was a highlight of the game. The decisive rubber game of the three-game series between the Dodgers and Tigers is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
