In-N-Out Burger, a popular fast-food chain, has a simple menu that includes basic burgers, fries, and shakes. However, by 2005, the company had started listing some of its most popular off-menu orders on a "Not-So-Secret Menu" online.
The Animal Style burger, a customer favorite, is a prime example of how In-N-Out accommodates special orders. According to the company's website, the Animal Style burger is a burger of your choice with hand-leafed lettuce, tomato, a mustard-cooked beef patty, and additional toppings such as pickle, extra spread, and grilled onions.
In-N-Out's chief operating officer, Denny Warnick, explained that the Animal Style burger originated in the early 1960s when a customer asked for a customized burger made in the same way as one of the company's associates. The name "Animal Style" was created on the spot, and over the years, many of the variations in preparation for basic menu items were given names by customers who frequently ordered them.
In-N-Out's off-menu list includes several other popular items, such as Double-Meat, the 3x3, the 4x4, the Grilled Cheese, and Protein Style. These items are not listed on the company's website, but are available upon request.
The company's founders, Harry and Esther Snyder, opened the first In-N-Out in a suburb of Los Angeles in 1948. Today, the company is still privately owned by the Snyder family and has over 400 locations in 10 states.
