A United Airlines flight from Denver to San Diego was delayed Thursday after a live bullet was discovered aboard the plane before departure.
Routine checks were being conducted on United Flight 1302 as it prepared to leave Denver International Airport when the bullet was found. According to reports, passengers were instructed to deplane with their carry-on bags while security personnel searched the aircraft.
A spokesperson for United Airlines confirmed in a statement that a live round had been discovered on board and that a security sweep of the plane was necessary. The airline did not know how the bullet came to be on the flight or who it belonged to.
The crew informed passengers that they would have to deplane due to a "security breach," and apologized for the inconvenience. Passengers were required to leave their carry-on bags behind as security personnel searched the aircraft.
Flight 1302 eventually took off from Denver at approximately 3:41 p.m., more than two hours after its scheduled departure time of 1:25 p.m. The flight was carrying 178 passengers and six crew members, according to United Airlines.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has been directed by the airline to provide additional information on the incident.
