A fire broke out at the Eagle's Nest, a mountain retreat built for Adolf Hitler in the Bavarian Alps, on Friday evening. The blaze was battled by firefighters against strong winds, but the extent of the damage is not yet clear.
A 33-year-old German citizen, who showed signs of mental illness, was arrested on suspicion of arson. He was seen leaving the area on a motorcycle and was taken to a psychiatric facility. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a political motive for the fire, given the Eagle's Nest's notorious history.
The Kehlsteinhaus, as the Eagle's Nest is known in Germany, is a seasonal restaurant and tourist attraction that has operated since 1952. It is accessible by an elevator during the day and features an exhibit on its history. The building is located more than 6,000 feet above sea level.
Bavaria's interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, has stated that the government will not leave the site as a ruin. He emphasized the importance of continuing to honor the memory of the past. No injuries were reported in the fire.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are still under investigation.
