A popular children's educator, Ms. Rachel Griffin Accurso, was confronted by a podcaster, Avi Lichtschein, about her views on Israel during an encounter at a neighborhood park. According to Lichtschein's podcast, "Depends on the Context," he asked Accurso why she was critical of Israel, and she responded that she was not anti-Israel, but rather opposed to the Israeli government and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Lichtschein expressed skepticism about Accurso's claim, pointing out that Netanyahu is the democratically elected leader of the sovereign nation of Israel. Accurso also made comments that Lichtschein described as "absurd," saying that Israel was committing a "genocide" through its conflict with Hamas, citing the deaths of thousands of children.
Lichtschein pushed back on Accurso's characterization of the conflict, explaining that the term "genocide" carries a specific meaning that goes beyond simply describing a war. He argued that using the term in this way can have serious consequences, including inciting violence against Jews around the world.
Accurso's husband's family is Jewish, and she has stated that she supports the existence of a Jewish state. However, Lichtschein expressed concern that her words are causing harm to the Jewish community, and that she has a responsibility to understand the impact of her statements.
Lichtschein spoke with Accurso's husband about the matter, apologizing for upsetting her, but not retracting his comments. He stated that he was trying to point out the potential consequences of her words, rather than changing her mind.
