Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has released a new text exchange between Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. John Mascola, then-director of the Vaccine Research Center under NIAID.

The message, which was disclosed on Sunday, shows that Fauci received information about potential concerns related to pregnancy and COVID-19 vaccines in January 2021. According to the message, Dr. Mascola wrote that initial studies had avoided vaccinating pregnant women in the first trimester due to possible fever and higher rates of miscarriage.

Senator Johnson's committee is reviewing records related to federal officials' handling of COVID-19 vaccine safety concerns. The senator has expressed concern about Fauci's response to these issues, saying that it was unclear from whom Fauci received information about cytokine storms, a potential adverse reaction associated with COVID-19.

Johnson also released an email sent to Fauci by Dr. Janet Woodcock, the former commissioner of the FDA, in May 2021. The email raised concerns about "adverse events" after COVID vaccination and called for further study into the matter. Johnson accused Fauci of failing to act on this information.

Fauci has declined a request from Senator Johnson to testify before a second Senate panel investigating his handling of the pandemic. Fauci's attorney argued that compelling him to testify again would be "impermissibly harassing" and motivated by political purposes.
