A kayaker fishing off the coast of Malibu was rushed to a local hospital on Sunday morning after a shark encounter left him with two bite wounds. The incident occurred near Paradise Cove in Los Angeles County, according to eyewitness accounts.
Witnesses reported that the fisherman had reeled in what was believed to be a mako shark and was attempting to release it when the animal bit him, causing him to fall into the water. The shark then bit him a second time before swimming away.
A manager at the nearby Paradise Cove Beach Cafe described the victim's injuries, stating that he was bitten in two places, with visible teeth marks on his lower leg and above the knee. The manager noted that the incident was unusual, as the beach had experienced a range of incidents in the past but never a shark attack.
A fisherman reportedly rushed to the victim's aid, pulling him from the water onto his boat and bringing him back to shore. The victim then called his girlfriend, a retired lifeguard, who helped him from the boat and assisted him onshore.
Los Angeles County Fire Department crews responded to the scene and took the victim to a local hospital. The beach remained open following the incident, and officials have not commented on the likelihood of future shark encounters in the area.
