A high-speed chase involving two suspected human smugglers unfolded on a Texas highway on Thursday, with one of the men allegedly carjacking a civilian at gunpoint after bailing out of the vehicle.
The incident occurred on Interstate 10 in Fabens, where authorities had been pursuing the suspects' vehicle, which was traveling at speeds of up to 100mph. A helicopter provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Air and Marine Operations captured the pursuit on video, showing the vehicle being disabled and the two occupants fleeing on foot.
According to the video, one of the suspects allegedly carjacked a civilian at gunpoint before being taken into custody. The other suspect was quickly apprehended by a member of the Texas Department of Public Safety. Authorities have not released information about how many people were allegedly being smuggled or their nationalities.
The incident took place near a Speedway gas station at around 9:16 a.m. The suspects are expected to face charges related to human smuggling and evading arrest or detention.
CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott praised the coordination between various law enforcement agencies involved in the pursuit, saying "Outstanding coordination by Border Patrol, AMO, HSI and Texas DPS." Scott also emphasized the risks taken by human smugglers, saying "Smugglers risk lives for profit. We will keep taking them down."
