A drone attack by Ukrainian forces on Monday killed 12 people and injured 39 others in the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk, according to authorities in the Tatarstan region.

The attack targeted industrial and civilian facilities, including oil refineries and a petrochemical plant. The city is an important hub for oil refining, with two refineries and a population of approximately 240,000 people. It is located roughly 1,200 kilometers east of the Ukrainian border.

Ukraine has been targeting Russian oil facilities with long-range drones on a near-daily basis in recent months, causing fuel shortages and reducing Russia's refining capacity. The attacks have also had an impact on the Russian public.

The drone attack on Nizhnekamsk is part of what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described as a campaign to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the conflict, which began over four years ago. Ukraine has developed long-range drones that can reach distances of up to 2,000 kilometers from the border.

The international community has expressed concern about the impact of the conflict on civilians, with thousands reported killed or injured in Russia's airstrikes on Ukrainian cities and towns. The United Nations has documented numerous civilian casualties resulting from Russian attacks.
