An 8-year-old boy was tragically killed on Tuesday morning at a YMCA summer camp in Massachusetts after a tree fell on multiple people. The incident occurred at Camp Chickami in Wayland, where summer camp is being held by the West Suburban YMCA.
According to officials from the fire and police departments, the tree fell and struck another tree, creating a domino effect that resulted in several injuries. The 8-year-old boy was struck by a large branch, while an adult victim, identified as a camp counselor, suffered less severe injuries from being hit by a smaller branch.
First responders were quickly dispatched to the scene, where they found the child suffering from life-threatening injuries and the adult with minor injuries. Despite efforts to save him, the 8-year-old was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The West Suburban YMCA has announced that Camp Chickami will remain closed for the remainder of the week following the incident. In a statement, President and CEO Jack Fucci expressed condolences to the family of the deceased child and offered support to camp staff, campers, and their families. Grief counseling resources have been made available.
Wayland officials also extended their condolences to the family and friends affected by the tragedy.
