A recent study suggests that early humans may have played a more significant role in their own survival than previously thought. Researchers have found evidence of elephant butchery dating back around 1.8 million years, during the early Pleistocene epoch.

The discovery was made at Olduvai Gorge, a site in northern Tanzania's Serengeti Plains known for its major finds of early human fossils and tools. Excavators found stone tools alongside bones of ancient elephants, which were likely deliberately butchered by early human ancestors.

The study's authors argue that this evidence suggests that early humans processed elephant carcasses more systematically than previously thought. This ability to butcher large animals would have provided a significant food source for early humans, allowing them to generate a surplus of meat and potentially leading to larger and more complex occupation sites.

According to the researchers, this shift in behavior represents a unique evolutionary trajectory with no direct modern analogue. The findings suggest that early humans adapted strategically to megafaunal resources, which would have had implications for their subsistence and social organization.

The study's authors note that meat from large animals like elephants would have provided a significant advantage for the survival and adaptation of early human groups. This discovery adds to our understanding of human diets throughout history, including recent findings on ancient food remains in Pompeii and DNA evidence on the Shroud of Turin.
