Girl Scouts of the USA is introducing a new product for the 2027 cookie season: Patch Pals, a line of soft-baked, blueberry muffin-flavored dog treats. Created in collaboration with BARK, the company behind BarkBox, the treats feature one of four "patch" designs representing iconic Girl Scout experiences.
Ben Donati, an emergency veterinarian at Apex Vets in Silver Spring, Maryland, expressed enthusiasm for the new product, noting that it makes sense given the growing trend of Americans considering their pets part of the family. However, he cautioned owners against overindulging their dogs with the treats.
According to Donati, treats should not make up more than 10% of a dog's diet. He emphasized that they are not a substitute for a complete and balanced diet and that dogs should not be fed a whole box of Girl Scout cookies or Patch Pals.
The introduction of Patch Pals comes as relationships between humans and their pets have become increasingly human-like. Donati noted that owners often anthropomorphize their pets, taking pictures of them and treating them as if they were people. However, this affection can sometimes lead to overfeeding, which can have negative consequences for dogs, including shorter lifespans and joint strain.
Donati suggested that owners consider using their pets' regular kibble allotment as rewards during walks or training, rather than continually adding extra treats. He also cautioned that treats can have behavioral consequences if used incorrectly.
Despite these warnings, Donati gave Patch Pals a positive review, stating that they should "add a lot of fun for the girls who are selling them and the families who are buying them." Patch Pals are scheduled to go on sale on January 12, 2027.
