Matt Gogel, a golfer competing on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, has been suspended by the organization for six months due to betting on PGA Tour events. According to the PGA Tour, Gogel placed wagers on PGA Tour events in 2024, although he claims these were "small recreational wagers on golf" and did not involve events in which he participated.
Gogel has released a statement asserting that he would never knowingly compromise the integrity of the game, and that his actions were an "honest mistake." He expressed his desire to continue competing on the PGA Tour Champions, stating that he looks forward to playing in 2027.
The PGA Tour has confirmed that Gogel's suspension will commence on Sunday and will run until February 22, 2027. This action is in line with the Tour's integrity program, which prohibits wagering on PGA-sanctioned events.
Gogel is not the first golfer to face suspension for betting on PGA Tour events. In 2023, two golfers on the Korn Ferry Tour, Vince India and Jake Staiano, were suspended for six months and three months, respectively, for similar infractions.
Gogel, 55, has a single PGA Tour victory to his name, which he achieved at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2002. After his playing career, he transitioned to golf broadcasting, working with The Golf Channel and CBS Sports. Gogel currently sits 20th in the Charles Schwab Cup points race.
