Functional medicine expert Dr. Will Cole has emphasized the potential role of peptides in healthy aging, citing their connection to longevity, cellular healing, and metabolic health. In an interview, Cole noted that peptides help with cellular communication and can be beneficial in improving metabolic health, but warned that the key to their effectiveness lies in finding a balance between their use and lifestyle changes.

Cole pointed out that an estimated 93% of U.S. adults are metabolically unhealthy, with only about 7% meeting the criteria for optimal metabolic health. While GLP-1 medications can be beneficial in reducing food cravings and promoting weight loss, Cole expressed concerns that overreliance on these medications could lead to disordered eating patterns and a growing fear of hunger.

Cole questioned the trend of using GLP-1 medications as a quick fix, suggesting that a more sustainable approach would be to micro-dose or use these medications cyclically in conjunction with lifestyle changes. He attributed the rise in metabolic problems to factors such as diets high in ultraprocessed foods, nutrient deficiencies, environmental toxins, and the presence of stress and trauma.

Cole supports wider access to peptides, but emphasized the importance of transparency, product purity, and clear labeling so that healthcare professionals and consumers can make informed decisions. He also noted that GLP-1s hold significant therapeutic promise, citing their potential to reduce inflammation, help manage autoimmune conditions, and improve gut health.

Cole expressed a desire to see more research on the use of GLP-1 medications and their potential effects on other reward-related behaviors, such as social relationships. He believes that finding the lowest dose that yields a beneficial result, paired with lifestyle changes, is where peptides can truly shine.
