Jake Whisenant, a 30-year-old rock climber who had made a name for himself in Yosemite's climbing community, has died in an accident in California's Sierra Nevada. According to the Tulare County Sheriff's Office Coroner Division, Whisenant passed away on August 3.
Whisenant was known for his impressive feats on El Capitan, one of the most challenging places to rock-climb. In May, he and fellow climber Noah Fox completed the climb in 14 hours and 38 minutes, a notable achievement. Additionally, Whisenant and climber Brant Hysell set a speed record on El Capitan's Lurking Fear route in October 2024, completing the climb in 2 hours, 55 minutes and 32 seconds.
Bailee Moore, who described Whisenant as her "lifelong friend and confidant," announced his death. She expressed her grief, stating that her heart was "impossibly heavy" and that her family was "absolutely devastated." However, she also found solace in the fact that Whisenant died doing what he loved.
The circumstances of Whisenant's death have not been disclosed by authorities, who have listed it as an accident. The National Park Service warns visitors to the high Sierra to be prepared for potential hazards such as rapidly changing weather and rugged terrain. Officials recommend carrying necessary equipment and clothing, knowing personal physical limitations, and being prepared to turn around if conditions become unsafe.
Whisenant's friends have expressed their grief on social media, describing him as a kind and genuine person who will be deeply missed.
