Marmalade Cafe, a 36-year-old Southern California-based restaurant chain, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company cited "rent disputes and mounting supplier debts" as reasons for the filing, which was made on September 2.
According to reports, Marmalade Cafe owes over $1 million to various creditors, including Gilmore Farmers Market, US Foods, and the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. The company listed total assets of $12.7 million in the filing, but reported a net loss of $680,314.
Marmalade Cafe, which first opened in Santa Monica in 1990, had evolved over the years to offer private dining and catering services to businesses such as Boeing and Mattel. The chain's Calabasas location was a favorite among the Kardashians, according to reports. However, the company had been struggling with financial losses, and four of its locations had closed in recent years.
The bankruptcy filing comes after the Calabasas restaurant closed due to construction disruptions, which drove down sales. The Santa Monica location had also closed amid losses tied to the Palisades Fire, while the Original Farmers Market outpost had shut down after failing to regain pre-pandemic business.
Despite the bankruptcy filing, Marmalade Cafe's remaining four locations in El Segundo, Malibu, Sherman Oaks, and Westlake Village remain open, with a representative stating that they are "very healthy and very strong."
