Colorado Rockies rookie center fielder Cole Carrigg was benched by the team after he was caught on video flipping off Atlanta Braves fans during Saturday's 2-1 loss at Truist Park.
The incident occurred when Carrigg dove for a fly ball hit by Michael Harris II, but came up empty. The ball went for a two-run double, giving Atlanta the lead. As Braves fans reacted to the play, Carrigg lost his cool and made the gesture towards the stands.
Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer publicly condemned the behavior and stated that Carrigg would remain out of the starting lineup for a couple of days. Schaeffer said that Carrigg's actions were an embarrassment to the organization and that the team does not condone such behavior.
Carrigg acknowledged his mistake and apologized to his teammates and the organization. He stated that he was passionate about the game and had been trying to make a play that could have won the game. However, he acknowledged that flipping off fans was unacceptable and would not happen again.
Carrigg was held out of the starting lineup for the second game of the series, but did enter the game as a pinch hitter and later played center field and shortstop.
