The New York Yankees announced Friday that they plan to place slugger Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain. The move can be backdated to Thursday, which would make Judge eligible to return for the Yankees' regular-season finale on September 27.

Judge has appeared in just 66 games this season, a significant decrease from his previous two seasons where he played over 150 games each year. He last played on Wednesday in the Yankees' series finale against the Minnesota Twins, but was removed from the game in the sixth inning due to leg discomfort.

Judge had recently returned to the lineup after missing 83 games with a broken rib. Since his return, he has one extra-base hit in seven games. The Yankees continue their road trip on Friday night, playing the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix, and are currently five games behind the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays.

Both the Yankees and Rays have already clinched postseason berths, but the Yankees are likely to miss most of the remaining regular season with Judge out of commission. The 34-year-old Judge has been a key player for the Yankees, and his absence will be felt as the team makes a final push for October baseball.
